![]() ![]() ![]() LibreOffice has tried for decades now, and it still won't work. Any effort at being compatible with MS Office file formats is doomed to fail. Style and document structure should completely separated of each other, and things like figure positioning and consistent fonts & spacing just working instead of randomly breaking in all unimaginable ways (as in MS Office and LibreOffice). ![]() Browsers don't come with email clients and website makers anymore, so why should a word processor come with Excel, Powerpoint and a freaking database engine (MS Access in case you didn't know) bundled with it? The vast majority of users only use word processing most of the time if ever. Also I don't see any point in the concept of an office suite. Since Microsoft has hardly gotten any useful new features since Word'97, I would expect a lot of companies being able to create such a software given how much more advanced programming languages and other software we have than 25 years ago. I would gladly pay for a word processor if it were any good, and by that I mean not much like MS Word. My case for a Word alternative is a bit different and it turns out that no-one is even pretending to make lists for me. I expect there to be similar new development of word processors, but they are impossible to find. "Python web frameworks in 2022" listing Django, Flask and TurboGears while missing all the relevant ones of the last five years). At least in fields where I can easily confirm that (e.g. If only those were the issues, it would be fine - I could install a few myself - but the lists themselves are also ridiculously lacking. There rarely are even consistent screenshots of each program, given the absolute zero research effort those "reviewers" put into their lists. Instead you'll find for each program the features advertised by its maker mentioned, and then some complaints about the limitations of the free version (if there is a paid version too). Unfortunately the "tech journalists" (or bots) won't even bother to install the software they list. In principle you should find your question answered in all those lists. I came here looking for an alternative to Word, by Reddit search because Google is full of faux tech sites spamming lists of "The " (25, Microsoft Office, 2022). The paid options provide full pdf editing, cloud storage and a few other features that would probably not be needed at home. The one that I d/l'd in 2017 was very small and only 64 MiB but it has increased since then to 206 MiB as I am currently d/ling it. WPS Office is meant to be pretty good except for advertising but if it is blocked from net access that should not be a problem. There is a table of features shown on the following page which shows the differences between the different version> It has a lot less features TBH which might make it a bit limited if you use more advanced features. Softmaker FreeOffice which is the free home use version of their commercial offering. Other software makes a far better job of it IME. The page layout can look very different to MSO. There are giant gaps between the characters in a word which makes it look like it is a separate word in some cases! Absolutely awful kerning support IMO. The kerning support is/was the last time that I used it was very bad and they expressed no interest in fixing it. Firstly the print quality really sucks and is no where close to MS Office. I have d/l'd a number of free MS Office alternatives in the past and I have tried them but forgot to keep notes about their function so I cannot really provide any guidance on their usability except for LibreOffice.īe aware that LibreOffice although it provides a lot of features it has some big deficiencies IMO. ![]()
